According to a report in the Financial Times, Google and the EU have agreed in principle to the “outlines of a settlement” that will avoid a legal battle over antitrust claims against the company. The settlement reportedly also extends to mobile search, an issue that emerged late in the talks and threatened to disrupt a potential settlement.

The details of the settlement framework — and precisely what concessions Google is making — are not known or public right now. However that information will come out in the next days and weeks. Google will likely release its own statement.

In one form or another, the concessions need to address the four “concerns” that the EU previously laid out in a May letter to Google:

We are concerned that this may result in preferential treatment compared to those of competing services, which may be hurt as a consequence.”
  2. Use of third party reviews content: “Google may be copying original material from the websites of its competitors such as user reviews and using that material on its own sites without their prior authorisation. In this way they are appropriating the benefits of the investments of competitors.”
  3. AdSense exclusivity: “The agreements [with publishers displaying Google ads] result in de facto exclusivity requiring them to obtain all or most of their requirements of search advertisements from Google, thus shutting out competing providers of search advertising intermediation services.”
  4. Portability of ad campaigns from AdWords: “We are concerned that Google imposes contractual restrictions on software developers which prevent them from offering tools that allow the seamless transfer of search advertising campaigns across AdWords and other platforms for search advertising.”

According to the FT report, “The breakthrough came after Google said it would in principle extend the remedies it had offered to make for PC-based search to cover mobile search services too.”

We’ve asked Google for a comment and will update this post if we receive one or if any new details come out.

Postscript: Google has not confirmed the settlement and provided only the following statement: “We continue to work cooperatively with the European Commission.”

Last week, we took an in-depth look at whether or not Facebook ads are worth the money. Today, we’re going to focus on all of the things Facebook is doing for Facebook Pages, which are business’ free advertising and engagement vehicles. A recent study found marketers agreeing that Facebook is vital, but Facebook ads are not. That means having a solid Facebook Page, and placing a great deal of your company’s efforts on that.

Reaching users with the Facebook page, however, isn’t as easy as it used to be. Facebook did recently start showing you the percentage of your fans any given post reaches, at least. If you want to reach more, you can pay for it. Of course, your Page posts show ads for other businesses, and Facebook may even be increasing the number of ads it shows on these in some cases. They also started rotating ads for users that stay on pages for a long enough amount of time.

There has been a lot going on in the world of Facebook Pages, not only since the IPO, but this month alone. On July 10, Facebook announced that Page admins are able to change their vanity URLs (one-time only).

Facebook also began rolling out the Timeline format for Pages on mobile devices. Many businesses found this layout nice for providing interesting experiences for their companies, and given that more and more people are using their mobile devices to access the web (and Facebook), this should help get users more engaged with businesses who take advantage of the Timeline in creative ways.

More good news for businesses heavily using Facebook Pages as their primary social tools: Facebook is promoting interaction with Pages that users’ friends like. Some users aren’t very happy with this feature, but it does mean free promotion for the Pages have content appearing in people’s news feeds.

As recent as Monday night, Facebook made an announcement about things it is doing to make it easier to market Pages.

For one, they’ve added a new way to schedule Page posts, with the Pages Graph API. You can schedule posts to be published in as little as 10 minutes or as much as 6 months in advance. Posts can be deleted ahead of time, of course (as long as it’s more than three minutes ahead of time).

There’s another new feature called Unpublished Page Posts. These are posts that don’t appear on your actual Timeline.

“Admins frequently want to create Page posts that they can sponsor,” explains Facebook’s Omid Saadati. “However, these Page posts usually contain information that are relevant to only a segment of the Pages’s audience, e.g., 50% off all women shoes in all the bay area stores. Moreover, these stories don’t contain information that is relevant to the Page’s identity and story, which is characteristic of the content that should be on the Page’s timeline.”

The posts don’t appear on the Timeline, but they appear on the right hand side column, and not on the news feed. These can also be created using the Graph API.

Finally, Facebook has given admins the ability to extend permissions.

“Many Page admins use third party tools for Page content creation, moderation, engagement, or ad creation,” explains Saadati. “These use cases require a Page admin to grant permissions for managing the Page to a third party app. However, usually such an app doesn’t require full admin permissions.”

“For example, imagine an ads management platform that creates page posts sponsored stories and monitors Pages’ insights,” he continues. “Such an app requires permissions for managing ads for the page and reading the page’s insights, but it doesn’t need permissions for creating page posts and monitoring posts’ comments. The Page admin can add the admin of the ads platform as a Page admin with Ads Creator permission. Then, the Page’s access token that the ads management platform receives, will be granted with only managing ads and reading insights permissions for the page.”

Beyond all of this, Facebook has even more going on behind the scenes that could mean big things for Page owners. The company is currently testing a “Subscribe” button for Pages.

Facebook launched the Subscribe button for users last year. This enabled users to get updates from people without being their actual friends. It only applied to public posts, of course. But with Pages, posts are public, so why would you need this? Isn’t “liking” a Page enough? Not anymore. Users are not seeing all of the content from all of the pages they like, just like they’re not seeing all the posts from all of their friends. A subscribe button could mean that users will actually see more of your Page’s posts. Maybe. With the regular subscribe button, users can choose to receive all posts, most posts or just important posts (as determined by Facebook, of course).

According to Facebook, however, the purpose of the Subscribe button (which is only being tested with a small number of users at this point), is so people can subscribe to a page’s posts without actually “liking” them. Presumably, users could do both though. In theory, if I liked a brand – Radiohead, for example – and I wanted to make sure I saw everything they posted, I could like them, and subscribe to them, selecting the “all updates” option.

All of these Page features are just a handful of the things Facebook is doing to make itself more valuable to businesses. It’s looking like Facebook is going to get more useful for direct e-commerce as well. Beyond the company’s banking and payments aspirations, rumor has it that Facebook may soon be offering businesses a “want” button, which would seem right at home next to a “like” button on product pages, providing more free marketing for businesses.

Facebook is also said to be having talks with Walmart, and it’s yet to be seen what might come of that.

Microsoft has been fast-following Google AdWords with new features in adCenter recently, so it’s not a huge surprise that some have spotted what look like Product Listing Ads (PLAs) in Bing Results. Mark Ballard from Rimm Kaufmann Group (RKG’s) posted of seeing such listings and, while we haven’t been able to replicate this, we did get confirmation from Microsoft that it’s testing this ad format.

“AdCenter is currently working on several ad product initiatives. Each initiative is at a different stage development and rollout stage,” a Microsoft spokesperson told me in a statement. “The ad treatment referenced in RKG’s blog post is from a prototype experimentation that aims to collect initial engagement data on ads with detailed product information.”

While Microsoft wouldn’t give us creative specs for the unit, it appears to be a small, square image that accompanies the headline, landing page URL and text in the ad. As of yet, there’s no product name.

Many marketers would likely be pleased by the introduction of such a unit at Microsoft Advertising/Bing since the Google PLAs have been very successful. RKG’s own recent research indicates that PLAs drove 15% of non-branded clicks on Google in the second quarter, but at a 23% lower CPC than comparable text ads.

"If you pick up a bag of pet food and you see a vegetable-based protein (glutens) in the top few ingredients, keep moving down the aisle," says Dr. Katy Nelson, an emergency veterinarian in Alexandria, Va., who is also a member of the Iams Pet Wellness Council. "High-quality foods are made with animal-based proteins and high-quality refined meals."

3. Invest in your pet. Nearly 25 percent rank price as a deciding factor. But good deals may not be all that you've bargained for. "The ‘least cost' formulation could certainly explain the finickiness of many animals," says Nelson. "If a company is scrimping on the cost of the food, they're likely to leave out -- or at least decrease the level included -- of something that would greatly enhance palatability, as it is likely to cost the most to add."

4. Consider the age of your dog. Only 11 percent of U.S. pet owners take their pet's age into consideration when determining which formula to feed their pet. "I always tell my patients that healthy checkups start on the inside," says Nelson, who encourages feeding a pet a high-quality diet specific to an animal's age.

What Is Your Dog's Stage of Life?

It's important to consider the stages of life for dogs when deciding on your choice of pet food. "Diet requirements -- including protein levels, calories and vitamins and minerals -- vary over the life of a pet," says Nelson. "In turn, an animal's needs change as he grows from a puppy or kitten, to an adult into a senior."

Nelson shares these basic guidelines:

One to 12 months Puppy formula at this stage should include DHA for brain and vision development. Dr. Amy Dicke, a technical service veterinarian, explains that DHA stands for docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid. "The benefits of a diet rich in DHA starts in the womb, much like pregnant women taking prenatal vitamins," says Dicke.
One to 7 years Adult-formula dry dog foods should have crunchy kibbles to help keep teeth clean and tartar-free. Look for phrases like "dental care" on dog food labels. Foods for adult dogs should also contain a balanced omega 6-to-3 ratio for healthy skin and coat.
Seven years and older A senior formula with L-carnitine helps burn fat and keeps muscles lean. L-carnitine is a vitamin-like compound that helps turn fat into energy. Losing weight can mean losing muscle as well as fat, but adding L-carnitine to a diet helped overweight dogs maintain muscle and lose fat. Weight loss diets may also feature enhanced levels of vitamin A to reduce weight regain.
